Ready or not, here I come…

I almost always use the Chilly Half as my season kick-off race, and this year is no different. This weekend brings my first race of 2013. I wish I could say I was a bit more excited about it and that I had any sort of positive expectations, but I can’t. The way things have been going, this will be my slowest run at this event in years… perhaps ever. (2008 – 2:01, 2010 – 1:47, 2011 – 1:42, 2012 – 1:43) Man, I wish I could still run like that! I know I will again, but for now it is a tough pill to swallow and I am going to have to make sure my ego is not invited to join me in Burlington this Sunday.
I’ve only run 10+ miles two or three times this year, so I am approaching this race as a glorified long run in my efforts to build back my endurance. I am in no position to go out and “race” it or a crash-and-burn will be inevitable. Discipline will be key in making this successful so my goals are to run a smart and consistent race, having some fun along the way. Hopefully immersing myself in the race atmosphere again will give me a much-needed boost in motivation as well.
Good luck to everyone else racing this weekend! I hope you’re feeling a little bit more prepared than I am…

  1. Oh I am sure you will do great! You are stronger then you think! All that swimming and cycling has to benefit you in some way or another. Good luck!

  2. GO MARLENE, GO!!!!!

I wish I was there running this year! Mostly because a jacket would be sweet swag. Hard to believe it’s been THREE years since we first met! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, SWEETIE!

    Rock this out, biznatch.

  3. I know it’s easier said than done to just get out there and enjoy it. I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for the reality that my upcoming half will not be a PR. While I’m thrilled to be racing again, it’s still hard to check the ego. In the end, we’ll both get faster again!

Say what?
